Enjoy A hike through the trails of the Arenal Volcano National Park. Our experienced guide will take you through the tropical rainforest and through areas that were devastated in the past by the Volcano’s fury. During the hike it is common to observe a large variety of typical flora and fauna species of the region, like Tepezcuinte, Deer, Danta, Wild Boar, Coati, Sloth, and Snakes like Boa, Fer de Lance, and Parrot Snakes, as well as many birds like Parrots, Parakeets, Hummingbirds, and Bellbirds. Once we reach the area of the “Lava Flows of 1992” you will observe a large quantity of volcanic material which was launched by the crater during a high activity period.
This well known land is composed of 250 hectares of protected rainforest as part of a forest reserve. Here you will find 3 km (2 miles) of trails including 15 bridges which were designed especially for bird watching and taking in the amazing beauties of the rainforest.
Our naturalist guide will provide you with interesting information about the species of flora and fauna that you will encounter, from each different level and perspective of the rainforest. From these bridges, high in the air, you will enjoy impressive views of the tree canopy and easily spot the wildlife that makes this forest their home.
The hike is apt for all types of people, consisting of some moderately steep hills and trails designed in harmony with nature.
Located just 5 km from the Nicaraguan border, the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is considered one of the most biologically rich natural refuges in the continent, especially for bird watching. The refuge is also home to many animals, like sloths, monkeys, caiman, lizards, bats, and a large variety of flora which is characteristic of the wetlands. On the way, we will travel through the plains of San Carlos, observing many of the traditional plantations, such as sugar cane, pineapple, papaya, yucca, and large livestock farms.
Just 45 minutes from La Fortuna, we will take you through narrow underground passages and incredible mazes, through streams and tunnels where we can observe the rock formation called “La Papaya” and other stalagmites and stalactites that are sure to leave you in wonder. It is possible to get deep within the earth and go exploring, with this tour, to discover a world in a whole different light. With lanterns lighting the way, we will wander through these ancient underground mazes and seabed, exposed now after thousands of years.
For those who love long walks deep within the tropical rainforest and in are good physical condition, this tour involving two hours of hiking uphill and another two hiking back down is an excellent option. Cerro Chato is a dormant volcano, known as Arenal’s brother, which has shown no signs of activity for thousands of years. Climbing to its peak is a true adventure – offering incomparable views of the active Arenal Volcano. We begin our ascent on the west side, near Hotel Observatory Lodge. There is an emerald green lake at the top, which is the perfect place for a refreshing swim.
Located in the outskirts of the Tenorio Volcano, this unique place is one of the most incredible spots in Costa Rica. It’s turquoise blue waters are in complete harmony with the natural beauty that surrounds it. The 4 hour hike (7 km) will take us through the rainforest and to several points of interest like “Los Teñideros” where the river acquires its one of a kind color. We will also visit “Las Ollas”, fumaroles filled with mud, and natural hot water springs. Later, we will come upon one of the most attractive features of this magical place, a beautiful waterfall.
Canopy is without a doubt one of the most popular adventure sports in Costa Rica. This activity consists in crossing the rainforest from tree located high in the tree canopy. The tour includes a safety speech, provided by expert guides. It is possible to observe howler monkeys, sloth, toucans, reptiles and other species. The 12 cables and 14 platforms are divided in two sections. The majority are located in trees to offer guests incomparable views and contact with nature.
This is an excellent combination of horseback and hiking through gorgeous scenery. Experience is not necessary, our horses are well trained. They will take us to the entrance of the waterfall through pastures, rainforest trails over hills offering spectacular views. Once we arrive, we will leave our horses and hike down the trail to the river. This fantastic area is very tranquil and special for relaxing in the rainforest and enjoying the wildlife that inhabits its surroundings while you swim in the crystal waters.
Finally, we will horseback ride among livestock and colts and across 3 different rivers.
Our trip begins from your hotel, with morning and afternoon tours available. After 30 minutes in a 4x4 vehicle through the rainforest, we will arrive at the canyon entrance, and its beautiful waterfalls. Our expert guides will provide a safety briefing to provide you with all of the necessary instructions to perform the activity.
From the start, you will see a a breathtaking waterfall which falls from the top of the canyon to its base. We have 5 rappels, 4 of which are through waterfalls and the other a dry rock wall.
Rafting is a fascinating activity, which allows you to participate in harmony with nature, mixing water, with adventure and the beautiful natural environment. This section is ideal for first time rafters. In addition to participating in this thrilling adventure, you will be enveloped in the beautiful scenery of the tropical rainforest while paddling for around 2 hours. Halfway through the river we will enjoy a fresh fruit break to give us the energy for the remainder of the trip. Afterwards we will stop at a restaurant for a hot lunch, true to Costa Rica traditions. We return to the hotel around 4 pm.
Our safari float tour is an excellent opportunity to enjoy the flora and fauna of the calm waters of Peñas Blancas or Arenal Rivers. Aboard our inflatable rafts you will safe enjoy a half day tour in the company of our expert naturalist guides. Together you will live an incredible experience in the rainforest, observing the variety of plants and large trees of the region and the many animals which inhabit them, like sloth, monkeys, crocodiles, blue jean frogs, caiman, lizards, turtles, bats; which with luck, may fly near you, and not to the mention the countless bird species which live along these rainforest river corridors. We will stop for a snack at Don Pedro´s Farm, where we can observe the lifestyle of a Costa Rican farmer and the charm of this humble farming family.
This trip is a unique canoe adventure for nature lovers. Spend the day submerged in the midst of amazing flora and fauna where you observe animals just meters from you as we explore the river channels by canoe. We will paddle downstream through the rainforest, its huge trees and rich wildlife. This tour is an ideal way to combine a canoe adventure and a nature experience all in one day. We start out early to drive 2 hours to the famous town of Caño Negro, where we will be received with a delicious traditional breakfast before beginning our 4 hour exploration paddling through the Refuge. After lunch, the participants may choose to continue canoeing another 2 hours to the town of Los Chiles, or return to La Fortuna.
The tour departs from our office after a safety briefing and riding instructions. The trail will lead us to the La Fortuna Waterfall then we will head towards the town of Jauuri to observe different types of plantations, then on to a butterfly farm and finally to the town of La Guaria, across the Arenal River, where we will stop to rest, have a snack, and a refreshing dip before returning to La Fortuna.
